Tatoo Love

Spotted this couple walking from Sunda Kelapa and through the old Dutch Warehouses. They are living under a bridge, but "happy and in love", they told me...only in Jakarta!!

Plugging Holes

These old wooden Schooners are a LOT of work. These guys are hammering shredded wood into the cracks of the wood...talk about tedious work.

Bali Sunset

I wish my house had a view like this on the back porch...wouldn't that be nice?

Potato Head In Bali

We had our second annual "Daddy-Daughter" trip this weekend to Bali. Four of us Dads with our daughters. The highlight of the trip was our visit to "Potato Head". It was this very cool bar/restaurant right on the beach. The architect had collected all of these shutters from all around Indonesia, and built the entire back wall with them. A unique idea, and sure made me happy with my camera...

Happy Easter!!

The Door To The Stairs Is Open

Sorry for the "No Show" yesterday...I got home late last night, and the electricity went out after the huge rain storm we had...I don't know if it is related or not, but I couldn't get my computer to start up tonight. I would press the power button, and then hear three loud beeps...I tried like 20 times to start and the same thing....then just before going to bed tonight, it suddenly started up...weird...

I am off to Bali in the morning with my daughter for our second annual "Daddy Daughter" trip. Four of us Dads and our oldest daughters are going...should be fun....Have a great Easter Weekend, and see ya on Monday....hopefully, my computer will start again...

The Artist's Street

This past weekend, my daughter had a dance concert. It was located downtown. Just across the street from the theater was this street full of small booths where artists were hard at work. So during intermission, I walked across the street to take some photos...what a cool little place...

What's Next?

Sometimes, it is better to just let the photo do the talking...

Boat Repair

In my last workshop, I talked about lines, texture and color. By doing some creative cropping, you can really emphasize the lines, texture and color in a photo. Of course, it is better to get it right in the camera first, so you don't have to do too much cropping, but shooting with fixed focal lengths can make that difficult at times. I like this panoramic crop from a 35mm file...makes for nice prints on the wall...notice the lines, texture and color...

An Empty Room in India

My 2TB of photos are still MIA....it has been almost two months now. This is the last email I got from Singapore in regards to my Drobo failure...

"I hate to say it, but it's not clear at the moment what the next step might be. We do not know enough of what happened on that fateful day, only that power failure and force reboot (etc) all occurred. Anything else could have happened.

I have kept your case open in our system. And if you do come to Singapore, I would be happy to take a look at your Drobo, but regardless, it does not look too good, I'm afraid".

Needless to say, this last email does not make me happy. I just don't understand...am I the ONLY Drobo owner that has gone through such a failure?? I don't get it...

So, in the meantime, I am finding photos here and there...some on my old USB's, some on my work computer, etc....the photo below, I found on my USB...

Cat Lovers

I am not a cat lover. I prefer dogs, but I must admit, they make pretty good subjects for photographs. I took both these shots on the same day. Cats do have that "coolness" in them that dogs lack. Dogs are like the nerds, and Cats are the cool dudes...

The Old Man By The Sea

He is always there. This man. I have been to Sunda Kelapa countless times, and he always waves me over for me to climb aboard his small boat so that he can row me around the big Bugis Schooners around Sunda Kelapa. I have always wanted a photo of him, but was reluctant to ask as most older people would prefer to not be photographed. This time, however, I asked him if I could take his photo, and he agreed, and posed nicely for me. I got as close as I could with my Leica, and took ONE shot....and I nailed it. I think this is one of my favorite portraits to date.

Something Funny

One of the things I love about my Leica M9 is that it is unobtrusive. I can walk up to people and shoot without them striking a pose. Before, with my big DSLR, and big lens, people would automatically strike a pose or turn around whenever I pointed a camera at them. With the Leica, they seem to just carry on with whatever they are doing. Only the guy on the right knew I was taking their photo....the three ladies were all laughing at something, and didn't notice I had taken their photo...and that makes for a much better photo, I think...

Tough Life

I ran four workshops this past weekend, and had a blast...but it was hot, and I am tired...I scouted out a couple of places to take some walks, and we all had fun exploring and talking with the people living in the "kampung". I did some HDR, but didn't have my tripod with me, so this photo below took a little bit of extra work in post since my five exposures didn't line up as well as they would if I had a tripod...

I am hitting the sack early tonight so that I can watch the final round of the Master's live at 1:00 in the morning here...

A Pile Of Junk

Some may think that this photo is "over the top" when it comes to an HDR, but I think the effect works well for this image. I purposely went a bit further than usual to get that illustrative look. What do you think?

Selling Bread

I was drawn to the paintings on the wall...I am not sure who the guy is on the wall...looks like some kind of revolutionary kind of guy, and then there is the Arab script on the left...a pretty unusual combination for a wall in Jakarta...

Father and Son

When I saw the side of this storage shed, I knew I had to have a photo of it...the father and son were icing on the cake...

Photo Walk Near Work

There's nothing more fun than going out walking and exploring with a camera. I am running three workshops this weekend, so I went out scouting for a nice walk close to where I work, and found a really nice walk. Below is one of the shots from my short photowalk this morning...I am looking forward to taking my workshops to the streets this weekend...

House of Cards

A few yards from the huge Jakarta Dump, was this little house...obviously constructed from wood collected from the Dump...pretty creative, actually...
